I drilled through HS-405 rib through HS-702 spar and through HS-404 nose rib.  CRAP!  I blew the minimum edge distance requirement for the HS-404 Nose rib flange.

I went straight to the forums to see if this was ok, just like the HS-405 top and bottom flange edge distance closes to the front spar.  Some said replace it, some said make a scab flange, some said build on!  To Van's I went.  Here was the response.

Adam,

Yep, the edge distance is a bit close on the HS-404, but I would still fly with it.  The important spec here is on the HS-814-1 which looks great.  That is where he major portion of the load path is being transmitted.

The 2 rivets attaching the HS-404 are not really carrying all that much load, but more just holding that part in position.  I would continue building and use the assembly as completed so far.

Thanks

I'm still up in the air if I will replace it and forget about it.  But either way, if I build on, it is fine!

Upon further inspection as to why this occured, I found that my centre line crept in close to the flange side which allowed it to be offset more to the outboard of the horizontal stab.  So......

TIP:  Ensure that your flange centre lines are perfect or it will create stress down the road!
